Thanks to all who responded to my informal age survey!
I've compiled the results in a straightforward way. <18 : 0 19-25: 2 25-34: 12 35-44: 16 45-54: 11 55-64: 13 65 and older: 6 Lowest specific age mentioned: 19 Highest specific age mentioned: 74 The data forms a fairly standard, if rough, bell curve. --- My analysis: This is by no means a scientific poll; I'd call it anecdotal at best, but I do think we can find a few nuggets here to take away. Almost nobody under the age of 25 is in the Network Users Group. To me, this represents a divide between Internet generations, and I'll use my experience as an example. I'm 34, and my first exposure to computer networks was the BBS I dialed up in Kalispell, Montana in the 8th grade (approx. 1990). From there, I was able to exchange email messages vis Usenet and other protocols. By the time I was in college in 1995, the web was still in its infancy, and many people were still restricted to Usenet and mailing lists, essentially the text-only web using Lynx and Pine. In a few short years, though, the web exploded and the idea of web forums and HTML bulletin boards was developed. I have 24-year old coworkers who have never heard of or utilized Usenet. For them, it's all about the web. This poll was originated because someone was marveling at the apparent lack of RB newcomers in the NUG. This poll suggests, but does not prove, that this is an age-related phenomena. To prove this hypothesis, we would need to show the following: - that new RB users tend to be in the sub-25 age - a representative sample of RB users subscribes to the NUG - a representative sample of the NUG subscribers responded to the poll So, really, who knows perhaps REAL Software, if anybody. I do think we can be proud that the NUG community covers the complete spectrum of youthful all the way to, ahem, very mature. After almost 10 years lurking around on the list, I can attest to the skill and diplomacy of those who have answered my questions through the years, and I try to do the same where I think I have something to contribute. I think one reason is that mailing lists nowadays are associated with
getting spam. So when one visits the REALsoftware website and sees the "mailing list" drop down in the community section then the expectation is that they would just join another companies advertisement list. I'm only on the mailing list because that was the only community around when I started with REALbasic - I don't think I would have subscribed if I started out today due to this (in this case) wrong assumption. So I think new users of any age are more likely going to the forums to meet other users. _______________________________________________ Unsubscribe or switch delivery mode: <http://www.realsoftware.com/support/listmanager/> Search the archives: <http://support.realsoftware.com/listarchives/lists.html> |

I first started coding in the mid 70's and did a lot (for a hobbiest who did some in house stuff at work on the side) from the mid 80's to the mid 90s... But none in the 5 years before I picked up RB. Although I had used 7 languages before, when i started RB I only had a very slight clue about OOP... I only have a little more now! I do think there is some truth to generationally based cultural preference between Forums and the NUG users. I do think a mailing list is more time efficient , but those who grew up after their heyday never learned that type of workflow. - Karen _______________________________________________ Unsubscribe or switch delivery mode: <http://www.realsoftware.com/support/listmanager/> Search the archives: <http://support.realsoftware.com/listarchives/lists.html> |
