Hi all,
probably not necessary here but a little backup warning: I do weekly backups with Time Machine (as I hide the hard disc in case I get burgled it is too much hassle to get it out every hour ;-) Last week my hard disk started to make faint clicking noises while idle - quite annoying too. So I immediately made a backup and left the backup hard disk connected. My replacement hard disk came on Tuesday morning, so I put it in and restored from the Time Machine backup. According to the backup the last one was done on Tuesday at 1:13 pm. However after restoring and restarting I can find no file younger than last Friday - even on the backup drive. Time Machine did not give a warning - in the menu it always said "Last backup <time given>" So in short if you hear a faint click click from your hard disk it might be too late to trust Time Machine. Best Regards Markus P.S. I'll put the defect hard disk in an enclosure and will start up from there - might be able to recover some more recent files that way _______________________________________________ Unsubscribe or switch delivery mode: <http://www.realsoftware.com/support/listmanager/> Search the archives: <http://support.realsoftware.com/listarchives/lists.html> |

Generally, there's no damage until you have several severe crashes (i.e., computer freezes and must be powered down). Eric M. I had run TechTool Pro over it - after just checking 20% I had 79 bad blocks and stopped it there before I made things worse. The drive was showing read/write errors on some files (so a clone is out) but I hope I might be able to get some of the newer ones still off intact _______________________________________________ Unsubscribe or switch delivery mode: <http://www.realsoftware.com/support/listmanager/> Search the archives: <http://support.realsoftware.com/listarchives/lists.html> |

I didn't recommend it, and I don't recommend it as an only disk utility tool. The original poster stated that he used it and stopped it after it spit out a large number of error messages. From experience with the product, and from things that I have read, I do know that it can report bogus errors if you do not have the proper version. === A Mac addict in Tennessee === _______________________________________________ Unsubscribe or switch delivery mode: <http://www.realsoftware.com/support/listmanager/> Search the archives: <http://support.realsoftware.com/listarchives/lists.html> |

I am not a huge fan of TechTool pro, except as a tool of last resort. I have had times in the past when it reported all kinds of problems that were totally bogus and no other disk testing app would report. Then to top it off files it said were zapped worked fine. I still keep updating the crazy app though as a just in case kind of thing. I tend to go with Apples Disk Utility and Disk Warrior as primary disk utility apps. Fortunately, quick where is there some wood to knock on, I have never had a boot disk crap out on me. I have had secondary drives go bad though. I always have at least two internal disks with SuperDuper! making a second boot drive on a daily basis and Time Machine doing its thing on an external drive in addition. I would, as someone else mentioned, attach that disk as an external, non-startup disk, immediately stop Spotlight from indexing it, and try dragging over lost files to new folders on your new drive. e A Mac addict in Tennessee : _______________________________________________ Unsubscribe or switch delivery mode: <http://www.realsoftware.com/support/listmanager/> Search the archives: <http://support.realsoftware.com/listarchives/lists.html> |
